Schilling Farms Middle School
Sixth Grade Enriched Language Arts Syllabus
Course Description
This course will include a study of the following: English grammar and mechanics, Writing, Literature ( including Novels), and Word spelling/meaning.  Enriched Language Arts will be more literature and project based. Most grammar skills will be taught in a more condensed format.  Because of the amount of material to be covered, we will adhere to a very tight schedule.

Textbook Description
To help complete this course of study, we will use two textbooks; Holt, Rinehart, and Winston’s Elements of Literature, and Prentice Hall’s Writing and Grammar.  You are required to cover your textbooks.

Course Expectation
You are expected to actively participate in class discussions and activities by participating in groups, answering questions, giving examples, relating personal experiences, etc.  Part of your grade will be based on participation.  You are also expected to openly listen to others.
You are expected to come to class prepared with all materials EVERYDAY.  No one will have permission to return to their lockers after class has begun.  Be sure to carry all of your supplies needed for class.  You are expected to try your best!  You may be assigned extra credit at various times throughout the year at the discretion of the teacher.  Do NOT rely on extra credit to pull up your grade- strive for good grades and lots of learning all year!

Grading Policy
Tests/projects=50%, Classwork/quizzes=40%, Homework=10%
Homework will be one grade- each time I check for it, it will be 10 points of that grade(it will be a yes it is complete and I tried, or no it is not finished /I don’t have it= 10/0 points, no in-betweens)

Absentee Policy
When you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up assignments.  Shelby County Policy states that you will be given one day for every day absent to make up work for an EXCUSED absence. I suggest you get the phone number of someone in the class who you can call in the event you are absent to find out any assignments you missed.  (Projects are due the assigned day.)
